Electric Yellow Cichlids and Demasoni Cichlids: Many Similarities and Differences

Many people choose to include an Electric Yellow cichlid in their aquarium as these fish are very hardy. Unlike many Lake Malawi rock Cichlids, the Electric Yellow cichlid doesn’t require much care. What makes them really stand out though and why many choose to acquire them is their beautiful markings. These fish are distinguished by the bright yellow bodies and black stripes found on the anal, dorsal and pelvis fins. The animals are territorial and aggressive, but are more mild mannered than many other African cichlids.

If you choose to include an Electric Yellow cichlid in your tank, be prepared to buy more than one. Fish of this type tend to do best when included in a group of six with more females than males. Each grows to be approximately three inches long so a 25 gallon or larger tank would be appropriate. Be sure to add some rock formations in the tank. Those which include caves and passageways are excellent choices and the bottom should be either sandy or gravel.

The tank needs to be well lit and fish of this type feel more secure when a background is used along with a natural underwater scene. When you choose to have these fish, the water will need to be alkaline, medium-hard with a temperature in the 72-77 degree range. It must also be well filtered.

Feeding your Electric Yellow cichlid is easy. All you will need is some cichlid pellets or commercial fish food. In order for your fish to keep their bright yellow color, you will need to provide foods rich in carotene.

Keeping an Electric Yellow cichlid is similar in many ways to keeping a Demasoni Cichlid although there are some differences. The Demasoni Cichlid does not grow to be as long and tends to be more aggressive. You can limit this aggression by giving them rocks that they may claim for their own territory. It is best to keep these fish in groups of six also. Only one male should be included in smaller tanks as they will pair with a number of females at the same time. The tanks should have similar setups for the best results. If you wish to keep both types in the same tank, you can easily do so if you remember these basic differences.
